Marshall University Mentors

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tri-State currently has over 50 Marshall University Students volunteering as Big Brothers and Big Sisters!  We have full-time students, part-time students, grad students, and medical students!  They all have different interests: Greeks, majors, dorms and sporting teams, but one thing that they all have in common is that they like kids, can be a friend to them, and they know how to have fun!   Marshall Students have a unique opportunity to provide the children in our program with an up-close view of  higher education.

The requirements are as follows:

• 19 years of age or older and have reliable transportation and valid drivers license to participate in the Community Based Mentoring or 18 years old if you wish to participate in the School Based Mentoring.  (For more information on both programs, refer to the Community Based Mentoring webpage and the School Based Mentoring webpage.)
• Willing to complete a screening process that includes an interview, references and police checks
• Willing to make a one year commitment to the program
• Able to see your "little" 3 hours twice a month (CB) or one hour a week (SB)
• Maintain contact with your "Little" during school breaks in person or via phone, letters or email

The children in the program are:

• Between the ages of  6-14 (CB) and K-12th grade (SB)
• Screened  to determine if they are suitable for the program

• Most of the children we work with are from single parent homes, although we do serve other children if we determine that they need a positive role model or friend to provide a listening ear and fun!

If you are interested in becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister please email our office at huntington@bbbstristate.org or visit our Guestbook.  We will be happy to send you information or speak to you about our program.
